Postgraduate & PhD Applications
Personalised support for Master's, postgraduate and PhD applications.
Whether you are applying for a taught Master's degree, a specialist postgraduate qualification or a research degree, Study With FM can help you explore suitable options, understand the requirements and prepare a well-organised application. For PhD applicants, our support can also cover research planning, potential supervisors, research-proposal feedback and funding opportunities.
Postgraduate applications involve more than choosing a course
The right route depends on your qualifications, interests, ambitions and circumstances. A taught Master's application may focus on course fit, entry requirements and supporting documents. A PhD application can also depend on the proposed research, a department's expertise, supervisor availability and funding.
You may be wondering:
- Which programme or university fits my academic background and future plans?
- Should I choose a taught course or a research-based degree?
- What qualifications, English-language evidence and documents will I need?
- How do I present my experience in a CV or statement of purpose?
- For a PhD, how do I develop my own research proposal and approach potential supervisors?
- Which scholarships or funded research opportunities could be relevant?
- When should I apply, and how do I compare offers?
We help you turn these questions into a practical application plan.
What you can expect
Our aim is to help you make informed choices and present your academic and professional experience accurately and effectively. Depending on the support agreed, you may receive:
- A shortlist of suitable programmes, institutions or research departments.
- A clearer understanding of published entry requirements and deadlines.

- Feedback on your academic CV, personal statement or statement of purpose.
- For research degrees, guidance on research fit, prospective supervisors and your own proposal.
- Help identifying published scholarships, studentships and other funding opportunities.

Admissions, supervisor acceptance, scholarships and funding are decided independently by the relevant institutions and organisations.

How the process works
Initial consultation
We discuss your qualifications, experience, study interests and goals. For research applicants, we also explore your proposed research area and any previous research experience.
Profile and requirements review
We consider your academic background and the published requirements relevant to your intended programmes.
Programme or research-fit assessment
We explore suitable courses and universities. For research degrees, this may include departments, research strengths and potential supervisors.
Application plan
Together, we identify priorities, deadlines, required documents and the support you need.
Document preparation and review
Depending on the application, we may review your CV, statement of purpose, research proposal, references and other supporting materials.
Application and submission support
We help prepare and check applications. Depending on the application system and agreed service, we may assist you in submitting an application or guide you through submitting it yourself. You approve the information before submission.
Follow-up and interviews
Where included, we help you respond to requests for information, prepare for interviews and keep track of outstanding requirements.
Decisions and next steps
We help you understand offers, conditions and deadlines so that you can decide how to proceed.
How long does the process take?
Timelines vary. A taught Master's application may be relatively straightforward, while a PhD application involving a research proposal, supervisor discussions or funding applications can take considerably longer. We will discuss the likely stages and priorities after reviewing your circumstances. University and funding-body response times are outside our control.
What we need from you
Depending on your plans, we may ask for:
- Your qualifications, degree certificates and academic transcripts.
- A current CV and details of relevant professional or research experience.
- Draft statements, project summaries or research proposals, if available.
- Publications, presentations, portfolios or other relevant work, where applicable.
- Your intended subject, research interests and preferred destinations or institutions.
- Your approximate budget and any funding requirements.
- English-language qualifications, where relevant.
- Referee details and any known deadlines or previous application outcomes.
Please provide genuine, accurate and complete information, and tell us about anything that could materially affect your application.
Who this service is for
We work with applicants at different stages, including:
- Final-year undergraduates considering postgraduate study.
- Graduates applying for a Master's degree or specialist qualification.
- Professionals returning to education or changing direction.
- Master's graduates considering a PhD or another research degree.
- International applicants comparing programmes, institutions or destinations.
You do not need to have every detail decided before contacting us.
Work with a named adviser
Your case is handled by a named adviser, rather than a shared inbox. You have a consistent point of contact who understands your background, plans and the support agreed for your application.
Postgraduate course and university selection
We help compare relevant programmes against your qualifications, subject interests, career plans, preferred destination, budget, course content, duration and published entry requirements. For research degrees, we also consider departmental expertise and research fit.
Eligibility and admissions review
We explain published academic and English-language requirements and help you understand how your qualifications may relate to them. Only the university or relevant institution can make a final eligibility or admissions decision.
Application strategy
We help you prioritise applications, plan around intakes and deadlines, identify the documents required and decide what needs attention first. Where appropriate, we can discuss alternatives if a preferred route does not appear suitable.
Personal statement and statement of purpose support
We can provide guidance on structure, relevance, clarity and presentation, as well as feedback on your drafts. Your statement must truthfully reflect your own achievements, motivations and plans.
Academic CV support
We help organise your qualifications, research and professional experience, projects, technical skills and, where relevant, publications, conference activity and awards into an appropriate academic CV.
PhD research planning
For research-degree applications, we can help you explore departments with relevant expertise, investigate research fit and understand programme-specific requirements. We can also discuss how best to organise the work involved in a research application.
Research proposal support
We can explain an institution's proposal requirements and provide structural and editorial feedback on a draft you have written. This may cover clarity, scope, presentation and how effectively you explain your intended research.
We do not write research proposals for applicants, invent research ideas or methods, fabricate evidence or sources, or produce assessed academic work. The research concept, intellectual content and final submission must be your own.
Potential supervisors and first contact
Where appropriate, we can research academics whose published work appears relevant, explain whether supervisor contact is expected and help you prepare a professional introductory email and supporting material. Requirements differ between programmes. We cannot guarantee a reply, supervisory availability or acceptance.
Academic references
We can explain the number and type of references required, how they are submitted and when they are due. References must be provided by genuine referees in accordance with the institution's requirements.
Scholarships and PhD funding
We can help identify published scholarships, studentships, university funding and external research-funding opportunities, and review their stated eligibility criteria, documents and deadlines. Availability and awards are determined by the relevant funding bodies.
Application submission assistance
Where included in your agreed service, we can help complete application forms, organise supporting documents, check required fields and track outstanding items. The level of hands-on assistance depends on the university's application process. You remain responsible for the accuracy and authenticity of everything submitted.
Interview preparation
If an interview is required, we can discuss the likely format and help you practise explaining your academic background, motivation, relevant experience and, for research degrees, your own proposal. Interview arrangements and decisions remain with the institution.
Understanding offers and next steps
When you receive a decision, we can help you review offer conditions, outstanding documents, English-language requirements, deposits and response deadlines. If you need further support, we can discuss appropriate next steps and related services.
Fees and other costs
Your initial consultation is free. Fees for further application or specialist postgraduate support, if any, depend on the work required, the institution's arrangements and the service agreed for your case. Some applications may involve university-funded support; specialist PhD services, such as proposal reviews or supervisor research, may carry a separate fee.
We will explain what is included, confirm any Study With FM charges and identify relevant third-party costs before paid work begins. University application fees, tests, tuition deposits and other charges set by external providers are separate.
