Key dates for 2027 entry
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| 28 April 2026 | UCAS began displaying courses for 2027 entry. |
| 12 May 2026 | Applications opened for students to register and start preparing. |
| 1 September 2026 | Completed undergraduate applications could first be submitted to UCAS. |
| 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time | Equal-consideration deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science courses. |
| 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time | Equal-consideration deadline for most other undergraduate courses. |
| 25 February 2027 | UCAS Extra opens for eligible applicants. |
| 30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time | Applications received after this point are entered into Clearing. |
| 2 July 2027 | UCAS Clearing opens. |
The main January deadline is an equal-consideration deadline, not the final date on which a university can receive an application. Providers may consider later applications if places remain, but are not required to consider them equally with applications received on time. For competitive courses, plan to meet the applicable deadline rather than relying on late availability.
12–18 months before the course: establish your options
Start with the subject you want to study and where it might lead. Compare the actual modules, course length, entry requirements, location and full costs. Research the qualifications each university accepts from your education system and whether you need language evidence, an admissions test, a portfolio or an interview.
Build a shortlist that balances academic interest with realistic entry requirements and affordability. If a scholarship matters to your plan, check its eligibility rules and deadline separately: it may close before the course application does.
For a September 2027 start, this preparation ideally begins during 2026. Starting later does not automatically rule out an application, but it can reduce the time available for testing, references and course research.
May–August 2026: prepare the application
UCAS opened 2027-entry applications on 12 May 2026. Students could begin entering their details but could not submit a completed application until 1 September 2026.
Use the preparation period to:
- Check course requirements and select up to five choices, subject to UCAS restrictions for certain subjects and institutions.
- Record qualifications, subjects and grades accurately, including qualifications still in progress.
- Arrange a suitable referee and allow time for their reference.
- Prepare for any admissions test, interview or portfolio requirement.
- Draft and refine your answers to the three UCAS personal-statement questions.
- Confirm the application procedure and any earlier internal deadline set by your school or college.
The three personal-statement questions
From 2026 entry onwards, UCAS Undergraduate uses three questions rather than one uninterrupted essay:
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
- What else have you done to prepare outside education, and why are these experiences useful?
Each answer needs at least 350 characters. Across all three answers, the maximum is 4,000 characters including spaces. The questions do not count towards that limit. Read our personal statement guide for a practical way to approach each answer.
September–October 2026: submit early-deadline applications
Completed UCAS applications could be submitted from 1 September 2026. Before submission, check the accuracy of your course choices and qualifications, the completeness of your reference and personal statement, and whether any test registration or additional course requirement has been completed.
For Oxford and Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science courses, the 2027-entry deadline is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. Relevant admissions tests can take place before that date. Confirm the exact requirements on each course website rather than treating the UCAS deadline as the first action you need to take.
January 2027: the main equal-consideration deadline
For most other undergraduate courses, UCAS must receive the completed application by 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time for equal consideration. If you apply through a school or college, its own deadline may be earlier to allow time for checking and submission.
A complete application includes the required information and reference. Do not leave submission until the final minutes; technical problems or a missing reference can hold up an otherwise finished application.
February–summer 2027: decisions and offers
Universities review applications at different times. You may receive a conditional offer, an unconditional offer, an unsuccessful decision or an invitation to interview or provide more information. A slower response does not necessarily indicate a weaker application.
If you have used your choices and are not holding an offer, UCAS Extra may provide another route from 25 February 2027. Clearing provides a further route for eligible applicants from 2 July 2027. Availability depends on the course and institution.
When offers arrive, compare the academic conditions, total costs, accommodation options and the fit of each course. If UCAS asks you to select firm and insurance choices, follow the reply deadline shown in your account; it is not identical for every applicant.
After an offer: plan the next steps
An offer is not the same as confirmed enrolment. You may still need to meet academic or English-language conditions, pay an institutional deposit, provide documents or complete other university checks.
International students should also make early plans for accommodation, travel and any immigration process that applies to them. Where a UK Student visa is required, the university's Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and the government's application process are separate from the UCAS offer. The university decides whether and when to issue a CAS; the UK authorities decide visa applications.
Visa rules, financial requirements and fees change, including changes scheduled to take effect during the 2027-entry application cycle. Use GOV.UK's Student visa information for the current published rules. Study With FM provides education and administrative application support, not regulated UK immigration advice. For advice about how immigration rules apply to your individual circumstances, consult an appropriately regulated professional.
What if you are applying for postgraduate study?
Most UK postgraduate courses are applied for directly through the university rather than through the standard UCAS Undergraduate route. Deadlines, scholarship dates, research-proposal requirements and available intakes vary by institution and course. Check each programme's own instructions; do not use the January undergraduate deadline as your postgraduate deadline.
